Albert Einstein (1879-1955) is considered the father of
modern physics for his 1916 theory of General Relativity. He originally
believed in an eternal, non expanding universe but when shown the
incompatibility between the mathematics of this idea and its conclusions by
Edwin Hubble, Einstein removed the cosmological constant from his theory and
called it the greatest blunder of his career.
