Roger Penrose

Roger Penrose (b. 1931) earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Cambridge in 1958. An atheist most of his life, his studies on the low entrophy at the beginning of the universe led him to consider an intelligent cause rather than random chance as an explanation.  “ I think I would say that the universe has a purpose, it’s not somehow just there by chance… some people , I think, take the view that the universe is just there and it runs along – it’s a bit like it sort of computes, and we happen somehow by accident to find ourselves in this thing. But I don’t think that’s a very fruitful or helpful way of looking at the universe, I think that there is something much deeper about it.”

Roger is being kind to “some people” but to put it more bluntly, if the universe is an accident without a purpose then what are we? And why should we give a damn about one another or anything else?
