Atheism cannot in principle be a rational enterprise because the unrestricted nature of God renders all methods of disproof fruitless. The scientific method is useless for proving the nonexistence of a reality. God transcends the physical universe and therefore cannot be disproved by methods that can only apply to the physical universe.
A pseudo intellectual may ask: Can God create a rock so heavy that he cannot lift it? By definition God is all powerful and transcends the physical world. God does not move mountains with physical muscle power but rather with unlimited divine will power. Such a question is a contradiction in terms. God cannot create a square-circle. God cannot contradict himself.
A cynic may claim that God is a tyrant. God helps human freedom in every way possible to be complete and perfect, and therefore, would not undermine human freedom. Tyrants, who always fail and ultimately die, are a proof that God will not allow anyone to permanently deny human freedom.
There are other kinds of atheism not connected to the notion of “God,” and therefore not concerned with incompatibility between God and a particular phenomenon (suffering or evil). Socio-political atheism generally tends to be more irreligious than atheistic. It objects to religion because it an “opium of the people”. Those who proffer these claims frequently do not offer any argument against the existence of God, but rest their case on their sense of religion as antithetical to human progress.
