Georges Lemaitre

Georges Lemaitre (1894-1966) was a priest, astronomer, and professor of physics at the Catholic University of Louvain. For the last 6 years of his life he was the head of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.  He showed that the universe is expanding. This became known as Hubble’s Law. Sir Fred Hoyle sarcastically referred to the idea as the Big Bang.
