Can the scientific method disprove God's
existence?
No. The scientific method is limited to
empirical observation within the universe.
By definition God is transcendent (outside
the universe) and therefore not observable or measureable.
By definition God is all powerful and not
limited by space, time or any other condition.
It is impossible to disprove something
outside the universe because the scientific method is limited and useful only
within the universe. It is practically impossible for the scientific method to
disprove the existence of anything even within the universe because it would
have to disprove it everywhere at the same time.
Can the scientific method prove the
existence of God?
If science can show that the universe had
a beginning (13.5 billion years ago) then it must have a creator that is beyond
the limits of science.
If the probability of the universe
creating itself from nothing (nothing comes from nothing) is scientifically
inadequate (would require blind faith) it is not a reasonable hypothesis.
If the probability of the universe and all
that is in it, including the vastly improbable fine tuning necessary for life
itself, is absurd to the point of being practically impossible, then superior
intelligent design is a reasonable and probable hypothesis whereas any other
hypothesis would be an improbable and un-provable fairytale requiring blind
faith.
